BAGUIO CITY 鈥 The Baguio city government will be forging a Cooperation Agreement (CA) on Monday, Sept. 25, with national agencies and private partners for an electronic waste treatment, storage and disposal (TSD) area at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in one of its barangays.

The agreement to be signed by Mayor Benjamin B. Magalong finalizes the operational costs, sustainability issues, and matters concerning the personnel manning the new component of the Bakekang TSD, which will accept a maximum of 10 tons of e-wastes a year.

Earlier, comparative financial studies were done for the Bakakeng TSD with the Dampalit, Malabon City and Bagong Silang, Caloocan City e-waste collection facilities as baseline. The former MRFs of the 2 barangays were upgraded into e-waste facilities by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) through their Safe E-waste project, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).聽

The Integrated Recycling Industries (IRI) and EcoWaste Coalition, which were engaged for the establishment of these e-waste facilities, are also assisting in the Bakakeng TSD.

It was noted that a financial contribution from PLDT and SMART Communications, Inc. would augment the establishment of the Bakakeng TSD, which will still remain as a repository for recyclables.

Also attending the signing rites are official representatives of the Environment Management Bureau (EMB), the City Environment and Parks Management Office (CEPMO), the city鈥檚 General Services Office (GSO) and other concerned agencies as well as Bakakeng Central Barangay Chairman Dan Daniel. 鈥 Artemio A.
