Only eight of 10 students have attended classes under the government鈥檚 pilot run of face-to-face classes after some听of them听showed听flu-like symptoms, the Department of Education (DepEd)听said on听Friday.

鈥淲e鈥檙e barely hitting the surface,鈥 Senator Sherwin T. Gatchalian told a Senate hearing. 鈥淚t鈥檚 only 44% of the total number of schools and 80% of the total number of students.鈥

鈥淏efore we can transition to the new normal phase, we hope that we can get a larger number of schools that can participate in the expansion phase,鈥澨鼸ducation Assistant Secretary Malcolm S. Garma told senators.

Of 287 participating schools, 265 are public and the rest are private, the agency said.听About 23,000 students听were participating in physical classes.

Mr. Garma听cited听challenges听during the pilot run, including听limited time听and听resources.听鈥斕Alyssa Nicole O. Tan
