Duterte, Robredo cite sovereignty in Independence Day messages

PRESIDENT Rodrigo R. Duterte and Vice-President Maria Leonor G. Robredo cited the cause of sovereignty In their traditional messages marking Independence Day which differed in their tenor.
“This historic day forms the foundation of the liberties we enjoy today,” Mr. Duterte’s message read in part. “Through the patriotic fervor shown by our forefathers, we have freed ourselves from colonial subjugation and proved to the world that we stand united as the pioneer of republican democracy in Asia.”
“By cherishing the sovereignty that is borne out of the sweat and blood of our heroes, we stand firm and unwavering in our conviction to create a brighter and better future for all Filipinos — regardless of their status in life,” he also said.
Ms. Robredo’s message in Filipino, said the proclamation of independence 120 years ago “symbolizes our liberation from foreign occupation and our own nationhood.”
“In our time now, our freedoms are imperiled on many fronts…..from the disregard of human rights to the encroachment of our territories by foreign powers,” she added.
“Confronted by all these threats, the Filipino I know will not allow defeat. Instead, the Filipino I know will…fight for our freedoms,” Ms. Robredo also said.
Mr. Duterte’s message concluded: “Inspired by the sacrifices of those who have bravely stood before us, may we also find the courage to defend our cherished democratic ideals now and in the years to come.” — Arjay L. Balinbin
