PRESIDENT Rodrigo R. Duterte and Vice-President Maria Leonor G. Robredo cited the cause of sovereignty In their traditional messages marking Independence Day which differed in their tenor.
鈥淭his historic day forms the foundation of the liberties we enjoy today,鈥 Mr. Duterte鈥檚 message read in part. 鈥淭hrough the patriotic fervor shown by our forefathers, we have freed ourselves from colonial subjugation and proved to the world that we stand united as the pioneer of republican democracy in Asia.鈥
鈥淏y cherishing the sovereignty that is borne out of the sweat and blood of our heroes, we stand firm and unwavering in our conviction to create a brighter and better future for all Filipinos 鈥 regardless of their status in life,鈥 he also said.
Ms. Robredo鈥檚 message in Filipino, said the proclamation of independence 120 years ago 鈥渟ymbolizes our liberation from foreign occupation and our own nationhood.鈥
鈥淚n our time now, our freedoms are imperiled on many fronts…..from the disregard of human rights to the encroachment of our territories by foreign powers,鈥 she added.
鈥淐onfronted by all these threats, the Filipino I know will not allow defeat. Instead, the Filipino I know will…fight for our freedoms,鈥 Ms. Robredo also said.
Mr. Duterte鈥檚 message concluded: 鈥淚nspired by the sacrifices of those who have bravely stood before us, may we also find the courage to defend our cherished democratic ideals now and in the years to come.鈥 鈥 Arjay L. Balinbin
