China says US is ‘maker of security risks’ after Taiwan Strait sailing

BEIJING 鈥 The United States is a 鈥渕aker of security risks鈥 in the Taiwan Strait with its frequent provocations there, China鈥檚 military said on Wednesday after another US warship sailed through the sensitive waterway.
The US Navy鈥檚 7th Fleet said the destroyer USS Benfold conducted a 鈥渞outine鈥 Taiwan Strait transit through international waters 鈥渋n accordance with international law鈥.
The United States has been carrying out such voyages about once a month, angering China, which views them as a sign of support for Taiwan, the democratically governed island that Beijing views as Chinese territory.
The People鈥檚 Liberation Army鈥檚 Eastern Theatre Command said in a statement that its forces had followed the ship throughout and 鈥渨arned鈥 it.
鈥淭he frequent provocations and showing off by the United States fully demonstrate that the United States is a destroyer of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and a maker of security risks in the Taiwan Strait,鈥 it said in a statement.
鈥淭heatre forces remain on high alert at all times and resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.鈥
The US Navy said the ship 鈥渢ransited through a corridor in the Strait that is beyond the territorial sea of any coastal State鈥.
鈥淭he ship鈥檚 transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the United States鈥 commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.鈥
Taiwan鈥檚 Defense Ministry said the US ship sailed north through the strait, and that the situation in the waterway was 鈥渁s normal鈥.
The Benfold has been operating in the disputed South China Sea, where it has carried out two 鈥淔reedom of Navigation Operations鈥 in the past week. 鈥 Reuters
