A BILL that聽seeks to聽create a Department of Migrant Workers skipped聽the bicameral conference committee after聽congressmen聽adopted the Senate version on Wednesday.聽

The House of Representatives adopted Senate Bill 2234 as amendments to House Bill 5832, allowing for the measure to be聽sent to the presidential palace聽for President Rodrigo R. Duterte鈥檚 signature.聽

Under the measure, the agency will absorb the functions of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration and will be tasked to protect the rights of migrant workers.聽

The department will create and enforce policies while regulating overseas employment and the reintegration of Filipino workers.聽

The measure also creates offices聽in Philippine embassies around the world within three years聽that聽will absorb聽the聽existing powers of the Philippine Overseas Labor Offices and Office聽of聽the Social Welfare聽Attach茅.聽

Mr. Duterte has certified the measure as urgent.聽

Bayan Muna Rep. Ferdinand Gaite said he聽had聽opposed the adoption of the Senate measure聽because it won鈥檛 solve the problems of migrant Filipino workers.聽
