Bill to set up job centers in high schools听

A BILL听that will mandate job placement offices in public high schools听has been filed at the House of Representatives.听
Manila Rep. John Martin C. Nieto filed House Bill 10577, which seeks to听match students鈥 skills with a particular job early on.听
The offices will be听supervised by听coordinators from division offices of the Department of Education.听
Under the bill, these听people听should coordinate with local governments, public employment service offices and parent-teacher associations in听creating听career planning tools听for their jurisdiction.听
Job centers should also have at least one career advocate听in charge of keeping an updated听database of job vacancies, organize career enhancement seminars听for young job seekers and develop and administer testing and evaluation for听effective job selection.听
Career and employment advocates who are not registered and licensed guidance counselors听may听conduct career advocacy activities for students as long as they undergo听training and听hold a nonteaching position.听
Mr. Nieto said听job听centers would help听cut听unemployment and underemployment听by听boosting relations between industries and schools.听
鈥淭here are neither steps nor arrangements for a structure or system in place and readily available to ensure that听senior听high听school graduates will be able to find employment,鈥 he said in the bill鈥檚 explanatory note.听鈥斕Russell Louis C. Ku听
