For media outfits looking to听build a lasting听presence on TikTok, it is important to study the nuances of the platform鈥檚 community, according to experts.听

This means understanding the types of content that resonate with TikTok users, Kristoffer听Eduard M.听Rada, public policy head at TikTok Philippines, said during a digital literacy forum on Wednesday.听

鈥淚 encourage everyone who wants to enter into this space of educating certain audiences to also understand what these audiences are receptive to, because as you see on TikTok, there鈥檚 a certain way of doing it that鈥檚 very, very unique to the [platform],鈥 he said.听听听听听

鈥淚t鈥檚 a very different community on TikTok,鈥 Mr. Rada added. 鈥淟ook into that and leverage that knowledge to produce good content.鈥

Understanding how the different social media platforms work 鈥 especially in the context of digital literacy 鈥 is crucial, according to Rachel E. Khan, journalism professor and associate dean at the University of the Philippines-Diliman鈥檚 College of Mass Communication.

鈥淧art of digital literacy is for people to understand how a platform works, so they don鈥檛 get fooled by it when there are bad actors who want to use it in a negative way,鈥 she said.

Be quick, quippy, and quotable to be successful on TikTok, said听Lyqa听Maravilla, a registered psychometrician, podcast host, and听educreator听with 1.1 million followers on the platform.

News anchors are there as a mouthpiece, she also said. 鈥淏ut now people are asking, 鈥榃ho are you to inform me?鈥欌

鈥淚f they don鈥檛 get to know the person behind the account, they just don鈥檛 latch on that quickly, or they don鈥檛 stay for too long.鈥听听

Ms. Maravilla also talked about the importance of community. 鈥淥nce you have that community, they鈥檒l be the ones to actively share your content, participate… and [even] defend you when people are going after you,鈥 she said.听听

Trust should be built around that community, said Malou C. Mangahas, the executive director of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism.听听

Social media offers the opportunity to do something good, unique, and authentic, she said.
