Plastic Credit听Exchange听revamps system,听uses blockchain technology

Plastic Credit Exchange (PCX), a Filipino non-profit plastic offset program, partnered with Microsoft to develop a public, blockchain-protected credit registry.听
鈥淚t is important that the credit registry is trustworthy and available to the public,鈥 said PCX听founder and听chair Nanette Medved-Po in a statement.听鈥淏y using blockchain technology to not only protect the ledger but provide transparency around additionality and protect against double counting, stakeholders will know where and how they positively impact the environment.”听
Similar to听carbon markets听that听use听carbon credits to limit companies鈥 production of greenhouse gases, PCX uses plastic credits to limit the number of plastics that businesses produce.听听
Companies in the Philippines who have purchased plastic offsets include Nestle Philippines and Unilever Philippines. Meanwhile, companies like PepsiCo Snacks, Wyeth Nutrition, Century Pacific Food, Colgate-Palmolive, and听NutriAsia听have pursued plastic neutrality in the country.听听
According to PCX,听these partnerships have helped divert over 18 million kilograms of plastic waste from the ocean.听听
鈥淪ustainability and humanity鈥檚 response to it is one of the greatest challenges of our lifetime 鈥 a planet-sized challenge that requires a planet-sized response,鈥 said Microsoft Philippines Country Manager Andres听Ortola听in a statement.听鈥淭echnology can 鈥 and must 鈥 accelerate that response.鈥听
Microsoft provided an Azure-based blockchain solution to beef up the credit registry鈥檚 security, using a web application to integrate the blockchain into PCX鈥檚 current operations.听
