As Omicron looms, doctors push vax efforts

IMMUNIZATION COVERAGE聽鈥 including pediatric immunization 鈥 will help the country stave off the threat of聽, according to medical experts.听听
鈥淲e could use this as an opportunity to ramp up our immunization coverage,鈥 said Dr. Nina G.聽Gloriani, chair of the government鈥檚 Vaccine Expert Panel 鈥 Technical Working Group for COVID-19 Vaccines, in a聽聽with the National Task Force Against COVID-19.聽
Data show聽that聽vaccines and boosters聽help聽protect individuals from聽earlier聽COVID-19 variants,聽she added in the vernacular.听听
In an聽聽organized by the Philippine Medical Association, doctors encouraged families to get their jabs as聽聽can receive Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines, which were granted emergency use authorization (EUA) for this age group.听听聽
鈥淭hese vaccines have a very good safety profile, but please don鈥檛 expect that you won鈥檛 experience any side effects. All vaccines give you these reactions,鈥 Dr.聽Gloriani聽said at the Nov. 20 webinar. 鈥淭he benefits of the COVID-19 vaccines outweigh any potential risks.鈥澨
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in September that two doses of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine were聽聽in preventing COVID-19 hospitalization among persons aged 12鈥18 years.聽
SINOVAC FOR KIDS?
鈥淪inovac will definitely be applying for an amended EUA for its use for the younger age segment,鈥 Enrique Y. Gonzalez, chairman of vaccine retailer Family Vaccine Specialty Clinics,聽Inc., said.听听
This, he added, will hinge on two components: real-world data across countries that administer Sinovac to youths, as well as the filing of the Phase III data of the pediatric trial Sinovac is undertaking.听听聽
Mr. Gonzalez added that based on the data that is available from countries administering聽, its Adverse Effects Following Immunization are low and within the norm of vaccination use.听听
鈥溌爓ill be available in the first quarter of next year,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e are confident that 鈥 upon the filing of this information 鈥 Sinovac will be made available for the younger age group.鈥澨
Dr. Lulu C. Bravo, who heads a national committee that monitors adverse effects post-immunization, said that all reports they generate on the COVID-19 vaccines are made transparent to the public.听听
鈥淲e are moving heaven and earth to make sure that what we report will be given due diligence, so we can conquer and聽restore vaccine confidence among our people,鈥 Dr. Bravo said.听听聽
