Goyo: Ang batang heneral

THE MUCH-AWAITED sequel to Heneral Luna, the film follows the boy general Gregorio “Goyo” del Pilar during the final seven months of his life and the battles he lead during the Philippine-American war. Directed by Jerrold Tarog, it stars Paulo Avelino, Gwen Zamora, Carlo Aquino, Empress Schuck, Alvin Anson, Epy Quizon, Leo Martinez, and Mon Confiado.

Alpha

A YOUNG MAN is injured on his first hunt with his tribe’s elite group. He learns to survive with only a lone wolf to keep him company. Directed by Albert Hughes, it stars Kodi Smit-McPhee, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Leonor Varela, Natassia Malthe, Priya Rajaratnam, and Jens Hultén. Odie Henderson, at , writes: “There’s a pleasant, old-fashioned feel to Alpha. It plays like one of those Disneynature movies with sharper edges, a bit more grime and a complete lack of the English language.”

A PRIEST and a novitiate are sent by the Vatican to investigate the suicide of a young nun in Romania. The priest and the novitiate risk their lives and faith in uncovering the order’s holy truth. Directed by Corin Hardy, it stars Taissa Farmiga, Demian Bichir, Bonnie Aarons, Charlotte Hope, Ingrid Bisu, and Jonas Bloquet.

Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days

THE SEQUEL to Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds, the story follows three grim reapers— Gang-rim, Haewonmak, Lee Deok-choon—and their 49^th soul as they continue their journey to reincarnation. As they journey, they are confronted by the powers of the God of House as the grim reapers’ memories are restored from a thousand years ago. Directed by Kim Yong-hwa, it stars Ha Jung Woo, Joo Ji Hoon, Kim Hyang Gi, and Kim Dong Wook. The Hollywood Reporter’s Elizabeth Kerr writes, “Like many a sequel bent on topping its predecessor to prove the first entry wasn’t a fluke, the end result is just a bigger, noisier, less focused slog rather than continued world-building (John Wick: Chapter 2 and The Empire Strikes Back may the exceptions that prove the rule). Where The Two Worlds had an end destination it was clearly heading toward (even if it rambled on occasion), The Last 49 Days plays more like a disconnected historical melodrama pivoting on the Guardians and their intertwined fates.”
