New Japan PM tells Trump that US alliance is paramount in first phone call

TOKYO 鈥 Japan鈥檚 new prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, told US President Donald J. Trump that strengthening their countries鈥 alliance is her government鈥檚 鈥渢op priority,鈥 in their first phone call on Saturday.
Ms. Takaichi also told Mr. Trump that Japan is 鈥渁n indispensable partner鈥 in terms of the US鈥檚 strategies towards China and the Indo-Pacific, according to comments posted on the Japanese premier鈥檚 official website.
鈥淚 conveyed to him that strengthening the Japan-US Alliance is the top priority for my administration鈥檚 foreign and security policy,鈥 she said, according to the post.
鈥淲e confirmed our shared commitment to further elevating the Alliance to new heights.鈥
Ms. Takaichi spoke to Mr. Trump from Malaysia, where she is attending a regional forum, which began on Sunday. Mr. Trump spoke from Air Force One while on his way to Malaysia.
Mr. Trump will visit Japan from Monday and hold a summit with Ms. Takaichi on Tuesday.
Mr. Trump began their phone call by congratulating Ms. Takaichi on her appointment last Tuesday as prime minister, and the two also reminisced about late former Japanese premier Shinzo Abe, Ms. Takaichi鈥檚 political mentor, she said.
Ms. Takaichi said her impression of Mr. Trump was that 鈥渉e is a very cheerful and engaging person.鈥 鈥 Reuters
