Thirteen council members voted in favor of the , while Britain abstained. It was the third US veto of a draft resolution since the start of the fighting on Oct. 7. Washington has also used its veto to to the draft resolution in December.

鈥淎 vote in favor of this draft resolution is support to the Palestinians鈥 right to life. Conversely, voting against it implies an endorsement of the brutal violence and collective punishment inflicted upon them,鈥 Algeria鈥檚 UN Ambassador Amar Bendjama told the council before the vote.

The vetoed by the US did not link a cease-fire to the release of hostages. It separately demanded an immediate humanitarian cease-fire and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.

鈥淭he message given today to Israel with this veto is that it can continue to get away with murder,鈥 Palestinian UN envoy Riyad Mansour told the council.

Israel鈥檚 UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan said the word ceasefire was being mentioned 鈥渁s if it is a silver bullet, a magical solution to all of the region鈥檚 problems.鈥

鈥淎 ceasefire achieves one thing and one thing only 鈥 the survival of Hamas,鈥 Mr. Erdan told the council. 鈥淎 ceasefire is a death sentence for many more Israelis and Gazans.鈥

The US draft resolution would see the Security Council 鈥渦nderscore its support for a temporary cease-fire in Gaza as soon as practicable, based on the formula of all hostages being released, and calls for lifting all barriers to the provision of humanitarian assistance at scale.鈥 This is the second time since Oct. 7 that Washington has proposed a Security Council resolution on Gaza. its first attempt in late October.

Washington traditionally shields Israel from UN action. But it has also abstained twice, allowing the council to adopt resolutions that aimed to and called for .
