Senate to probe Jan. 1 air control system malfunction听

THE SENATE will conduct an inquiry into the Jan. 1 glitch in the country鈥s air control system that shut the entire Philippine air space, a committee chair of the chamber said, noting that the incident involves national security.听
鈥淕ive them (airport authorities) time to restore normal flight operations,鈥 Senator Mary Grace S. Poe-Llamanzares, chairperson of the Senate Public Services Committee, said in a statement on Monday.听听
鈥淎fter which, we will conduct an inquiry and direct them to submit a full report of what caused the supposed glitch and power outage.鈥听听
She noted that lawmakers will question officials from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) on the navigation equipment and determine who is accountable for the reported technical glitch.听听
Ms. Poe added the CAAP needs to be transparent and show accountability for the flight disruptions.听听
鈥淭his is a national security concern,鈥 the senator said. 鈥淭housands of lives depend on the efficiency and competence of CAAP.鈥听
The CAAP is responsible for implementing policies on safe and efficient air travel and investigating aviation accidents.听听
It is an attached agency of the Department of Transportation.听
Senators Sherwin T. Gatchalian, Joseph Victor 鈥淛V鈥 G. Ejercito and Jose 鈥淛inggoy鈥 P. Ejercito, Jr. also raised concerns about the hundreds of inbound and outbound flights.听听
Mr. Gatchalian urged airport authorities to take accountability for the inconvenience caused to thousands of passengers.听听
鈥淭he government must do everything in its power to ensure that this doesn鈥t happen again given the impact it would have on affected passengers and the negative impression that it would have on our foreign visitors,鈥 he said in a statement.听听
Mr. Ejercito Jr. called the situation a 鈥渄ouble black eye鈥 for the country.听
On Sunday, the Manila International Airport Authority said almost 60,000 international and domestic passengers were affected by the delays and cancellations.听听
All other airports across the country were also affected.听听听
Meanwhile, Senator Maria Lourdes 鈥淣ancy鈥 S. Binay-Angeles said it was time for the CAAP to upgrade its equipment following the 鈥渂othersome and concerning鈥 loss of power.听
鈥淚 hope the Department of Budget and Management can assist Transport Secretary Jaime J. Bautista in finding funding to upgrade the CAAP鈥檚 equipment this year,鈥 she said in a statement.听听听
