THE NATIONAL听Union of Peoples鈥櫶齃awyers (NUPL)听is opposing听the nomination of Presidential Spokesperson Herminio听鈥淗arry鈥澨齃. Roque, Jr. as a member of the International Law Commission (ILC).听听

In a statement on Tuesday, NUPL President Edre U. Olalia said Mr. Roque鈥檚 possible election to the听ILC听鈥渋s to diminish its respectability, mock its objectives and may taint its integrity.鈥澨

The ILC is a body under the United Nations (UN) that form the rules and laws to be adopted by UN member states.听听

Mr. Olalia said the NUPL鈥檚听opposition听is mainly听based on听Mr. Roque being a former human rights lawyer who is now supported by an administration that rejects human rights and has听鈥渞egressive positions on vital international law and principles.鈥澨

Another group of lawyers, the听Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG), also sent a letter to the ILC expressing opposition to Mr. Roque鈥檚 nomination.听听听听

The University of the Philippines鈥櫶(UP) Executive Committee听has听also rejected Mr. Roque鈥檚 bid.听

Mr. Roque spent one year in UP as an undergraduate student and taught in the UP College of Law for 15 years after completing his law studies in the US.听听

Elections for membership in the ILC will be held in November this year.听鈥斕鼴ianca Angelica D.听A帽ago听
