Sotto-Lacson, Robredo falling out spells trouble for both camps听

THE FAILED potential alliance between听Vice President Maria Leonor 鈥淟eni鈥 G. Robredo, the head of the current opposition party, and the tandem of Senators听Vicente C. Sotto III听and听Panfilo M. Lacson听spells trouble for both camps in the 2022 elections.听听
Dennis C.听Coronacion,听chair of the University of Santo Tomas Political Science Department,听said the听falling听out will hurt Ms. Robredo鈥檚 aim to have a unified opposition in next year鈥檚 poll and lose votes from Lacson-Sotto supporters.听听听
鈥淗ad VP Robredo shown good ratings in the surveys and had her actions shown that she鈥檚听a strong political leader, there would have been no serious challenges to her plan of leading the unified opposition,鈥澨齅r.听Coronacion听said听in a Viber message to听大象传媒.听听
On the other hand, the Lacson-Sotto tandem might not muster enough support without allies, according to听Maria听Ela听L.听Atienza, former chair of the University of the Philippines Diliman鈥檚听Political Science Department.听听
The Lacson-Sotto听tandem wanted to be labeled as听鈥渘eutral,鈥澨齭he said,听however, being open to talks with Ms. Robredo meant that they also entertain the possibility of being seen as opposition candidates.听听听
鈥淭heir failure in talks and negotiations with other groups may cause them to lose support,鈥澨齅s. Atienza听said.听听
鈥淭his is the difficulty in a country where we do not have strong parties and people vote on the basis of personalities,鈥澨齭he said.听鈥淚t is also difficult for candidates to gauge support from other politicians and their political parties as it is so easy to break coalition agreements and jump to the more winnable candidates.鈥澨听听
Mr. Sotto, in a Viber message to reporters on Monday, said the vice-president鈥檚听鈥渙utright rejection鈥澨齩f Mr. Lacson鈥檚 proposed听strategy听鈥渕eant they had something else in mind at the outset.鈥澨听听
Mr. Lacson suggested that all potential presidential contenders file a candidacy in October, then pull out in favor of one who will lead surveys in the months leading up to the campaign period starting February.听听听
Ms. Robredo听said on Sunday that听she rejected Mr. Lacson鈥檚 offer because of her听鈥減ersonal belief鈥澨齮hat she should fight for her presidential bid until the end, even if she ranks low in surveys.听鈥斕鼳lyssa Nicole O. Tan听
