President Rodrigo R. Duterte has ordered the聽National Food Authority聽(NFA) Council聽to pursue the procurement of 250,000 metric tons of rice聽amid聽supply shortage reports.

鈥淭here is a verbal instruction from the President to activate the 250,000 metric tons of rice on standby,鈥澛爏aid Cabinet secretary and NFA council chairman 聽Leoncio聽B.聽Evasco, Jr. in a phone patch interview with Palace media on Thursday night, Feb.8.

Adding: 鈥淭he president said it last night [Feb.7], and I received [the information] this morning.鈥

Mr. Evasco said he has called a special meeting for the NFA council to discuss the matter 鈥渂ecause [the] President does not want to decide on which mode of procurement to be pursued in getting the rice from outside.鈥

The council鈥檚 meeting is scheduled on聽Monday, Feb. 12, at the Palace, according to the council chairman.

As for the procurement mode, Mr.聽Evasco聽pointed out that the government has a number of options. 鈥淥ne is government to government; second option is government to private traders from outside; and third option is we let our traders purchase rice from outside.鈥

For his part, NFA administrator Jason Laureano Y. Aquino said聽in a press briefing that聽they requested for another 250,000 metric tons of rice (for import) but the council did not act on it.

鈥淲e are confident that we have rice,鈥 Mr. Evasco聽explained, noting that the council聽expects the聽arrival of the 325, 000 metric tons of rice acquired through the聽minimum access volume (MAV) scheme.

聽鈥淣FA tried to put people in a panic mode. Saying we don鈥檛 have rice? We have,鈥 he also said.
