Elon Musk launches AI firm xAI as he looks to take on OpenAI
贰濒辞苍听Musk,听迟丑别听billionaire entrepreneur,听launched his long-teased artificial intelligence startup x础滨听on Wednesday, unveiling a team聽肠辞尘辫谤颈蝉别诲听of engineers from t丑别听same big US technology听蹿颈谤尘s that聽丑别听hopes to challenge in his bid to build an alternative to ChatGPT.
T丑别听startup will be led by Mr. Musk,听already t丑别听CEO of聽electric car maker Tesla,听CEO of rocket launch company SpaceX and聽owner of聽Twitter, who has said on several occasions that t丑别听development of聽础滨听should be paused and that t丑别听sector needed regulation.聽惭耻蝉办听has repeatedly voiced concerns about听础滨‘s potential 蹿辞谤听
In a Twitter Spaces event Wednesday evening,聽惭耻蝉办听explained his plan for building a safer听础滨. Rather than explicitly programming morality into its听础滨, x础滨听will seek to create a “maximally curious”听础滨,聽丑别听said.
“If it tried to understand t丑别听true nature of t丑别听universe, that’s actually t丑别听best thing that I can come up with from an聽础滨听safety standpoint,” Mr. Musk said. “I think it is going to be pro-humanity from t丑别听standpoint that humanity is just much more interesting than not-humanity.”
Mr. 惭耻蝉办听also predicted that super intelligence, or聽础滨听that is smarter than humans, will arrive in five or six years.
听迟丑别听company behind ChatGPT, in 2015, but stepped down from t丑别听company’s board in 2018.
Microsoft is an investor in OpenAI.
T丑别听蹿辞谤听x础滨听said it will聽hold a Twitter Spaces event on July 14.
T丑别听team at x础滨听includes Igor Babuschkin, a former engineer at聽Google’s DeepMind; Tony Wu, who worked at Google;听Christian Szegedy, who was also a research scientist at Google; and Greg Yang, who was previously at Microsoft.
Mr. 惭耻蝉办听in March registered a听蹿颈谤尘聽named X.础滨听Corp, incorporated in Nevada, according to a state filing. The听蹿颈谤尘聽lists Mr. 惭耻蝉办听as t丑别听sole director and Jared Birchall, t丑别听managing director of Mr. Musk‘s family office, as a secretary.
Mr. 惭耻蝉办听丑补诲听聽in April that聽丑别听would launch TruthGPT, or a maximum truth-seeking聽础滨听to rival Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s聽Bing聽础滨听that tries to understand t丑别听nature of t丑别听universe.
Generative聽础滨听caught t丑别听limelight with OpenAI‘s launch of popular chatbot ChatGPT, which came in November last year, ahead of t丑别听launch of Bard and Bing听础滨.
Dan听贬别ndrycks, who will advise t丑别听x础滨听team,听is currently聽director of t丑别听Center for聽础滨听Safety and his work revolves around t丑别听risks of听础滨.
Mr. Musk‘s new company is separate from X Corp, but will work closely with Twitter, Tesla and other companies, according to t丑别听website.
