Sarah Silverman sues Meta, OpenAI for copyright infringement

Comedian听厂补谤补丑听厂颈濒惫别谤尘补苍听and two authors have filed听肠辞辫测谤颈驳丑迟听颈苍蹿谤颈苍驳别尘别苍迟听lawsuits against听惭别迟补听笔濒补迟蹿辞谤尘蝉听补苍诲听翱辫别苍础滨听for allegedly using their content without permission to train artificial intelligence language models.
The proposed class action lawsuits filed by Ms. Silverman, Richard Kadrey and Christopher Golden in San Francisco federal court Friday allege Facebook parent company听惭别迟补听and ChatGPT maker听翱辫别苍础滨听used听肠辞辫测谤颈驳丑迟ed material to train chat bots.
惭别迟补听and听翱辫别苍础滨, a private company backed by Microsoft Corp., did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Sunday.
The lawsuits underscore the legal risks developers of chat bots face when using troves of听肠辞辫测谤颈驳丑迟ed material to create apps that deliver realistic responses to user prompts.
Ms. Silverman, Mr. Kadrey and Mr. Golden allege听惭别迟补听and听翱辫别苍础滨听used their books without authorization to develop their so-called large language models, which their makers pitch as powerful tools for automating tasks by replicating human conversation.
In their lawsuit against听惭别迟补, the plaintiffs allege that leaked information about the company鈥檚 artificial intelligence business shows their work was used without permission.
The lawsuit against听翱辫别苍础滨听alleges that summaries of the plaintiffs鈥 work generated by ChatGPT indicate the bot was trained on their听肠辞辫测谤颈驳丑迟ed content.
鈥淭he summaries get some details wrong鈥 but still show that ChatGPT 鈥渞etains knowledge of particular works in the training dataset,” the lawsuit says.
The lawsuits seek unspecified money damages on behalf of a nationwide class of听肠辞辫测谤颈驳丑迟听owners whose works were allegedly infringed. – Reuters
