Twitter Inc. suspended an account tracking its owner Elon Musk鈥檚 private jet in real-time, with the billionaire threatening legal action against the account鈥檚 operator after saying his son had been mistakenly followed by a 鈥渃razy stalker.鈥澛

The suspension comes just a month after Mr. Musk, who bought Twitter for $44 billion in October, said his commitment to free speech extended to not banning the account.聽

ElonJet, operated by 20-year-old university student Jack Sweeney, had tracked the movements of Musk鈥檚 private jet using data available in the public domain before the suspension.聽

Mr. Sweeney鈥檚 other accounts were also suspended at the time of reporting.聽

Twitter and Mr. Sweeney did not respond to Reuters鈥 requests for comments.聽

Twitter briefly reinstated the 鈥渂ot,鈥 or automated, account before again suspending it, after saying sharing 鈥渓ive location information鈥 was a violation of its policy.聽

Mr. Musk had said in a tweet in November that his commitment to free speech 鈥渆xtends even to not banning the account following my plane, even though that is a direct personal safety risk.鈥澛

On Wednesday, Mr. Musk said: 鈥淎ny account doxxing real-time location info of anyone will be suspended, as it is a physical safety violation.鈥澛

鈥淒oxxing鈥 is the public release of sensitive information identifying an individual or organization, such as a home address or phone number.聽

鈥淧osting locations someone traveled to on a slightly delayed basis isn鈥檛 a safety problem, so is ok,鈥 Mr. Musk said.聽

The billionaire also tweeted that one of his sons, lil X, had been harassed, and linked it to the tracking accounts.聽

鈥淟ast night, car carrying lil X in LA was followed by crazy stalker (thinking it was me), who later blocked car from moving & climbed onto hood,鈥 he said.聽

鈥淟egal action is being taken against Sweeney & organizations who supported harm to my family.鈥澛

Mr. Sweeney, a student at the University of Central Florida, who also operates similar bot accounts tracking Musk鈥檚 jet on Facebook, Instagram, and Telegram, told BuzzFeed the suspension is 鈥渁 surprise to many people after he publicly said he wouldn鈥檛 do it.鈥澛

鈥淚t just shows that they can play the rules however they want to, really, for whoever they want,鈥 he said.聽

Mr. Sweeney tweeted on Saturday that Ella Irwin, Twitter鈥檚 vice president of trust and safety, requested the account be filtered and less visible to users.聽

In previous media interviews, Mr. Sweeney said he turned down a $5,000 offer from Mr. Musk in 2021 to shut down the account.聽

Separately, Twitter accounts tracking the jets of billionaire tech entrepreneurs Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Bill Gates were also suspended. 鈥斅Reuters
