Cloud migration remains a hurdle for Filipino enterprises, says IBM听

By Bronte H. Lacsamana
Given the tremendous growth of the cloud computing market over the past year, driven by lower costs, data security awareness, and emerging technologies, enterprises in the Philippines need to try harder to improve their hybrid, multi-cloud approach, according to IBM Philippines President听and Country General Manager听础颈濒别别苍听Judan-闯颈补辞.听听
鈥淭he pandemic has highlighted the importance of adaptability. Organizations must now be able to adapt their operations and customer offerings at an unprecedented pace 鈥 but all too often, legacy systems, processes, and methodologies hamper them,鈥 she told听大象传媒.听听
In the Philippines, enterprises听plan on spending half听of听their cloud budget on hybrid over the next three years,听based on听IBM鈥檚 hybrid cloud platform advantage听听in 2020. Findings also showed the value derived from hybrid, multi-cloud platform technology is 2.5 times the value derived from a single platform or cloud.听
The听executives听surveyed for the study听showed awareness of听how much business performance can improve from a hybrid multi-cloud approach, said Ms.听Judan-闯颈补辞.听听
鈥淲e鈥檒l see more businesses leveraging a secure, interoperable, open, and free from vendor lock-in hybrid multi-cloud platform technology that embeds AI (artifical intelligence) to achieve successful business transformation,鈥 she added.
CHALLENGES
The听four听main challenges that come with adoption of this technology are skills, processes, adjusting to client experience, and scalability.听
1. SKILLS听
For IBM, the agility of cloud environments comes with a flipside 鈥 the need for a lot of automation in a hyper-fast and mega-large scale.听
鈥淭his means, from managing monolithic architectures to microservices by the hundreds.听It听requires different skills and a different mindset of management,鈥 said Ms.听Judan-Jiao.听
To avoid failing due to this challenge, her suggestion to mitigate this is to prioritize workloads that need听to be moved to different cloud environments based on the skills currently available.
2. PROCESSES听
The听processes听that support these environments, when overlooked, become a听challenge, she also warned.听
鈥淭he service delivery management fundamentally changes, including those that deal with stakeholders and users who are now more empowered and on self-help mode,鈥 she said.听
This means not any multi-cloud approach will do, as organizations have to听ascertain how the development of enhanced cloud capabilities aligns with the transformation of processes and the wider operating model.听
Ms.听Judan-Jiao stressed: 鈥They should determine the cloud environment that makes sense based on external and internal business processes.鈥听
3. CLIENT EXPERIENCE听
On听the client experience, IBM鈥檚 advice delved into听barriers听like听hard and soft infrastructure and technology limitation,听especially during the pandemic where enterprises have fully remote working models.听听
鈥淎s we shift to the 鈥榓nywhere workplace鈥 model, the IT听(information technology)听teams need the flexibility to adjust the deployment of their apps where it runs best yet build once,鈥 she explained.听
4. SCALABILITY听
Finally, with limited resources and funding capacity,听questions听are raised听on听how to scale across deployment locations, whether it鈥檚 the shift to online transactions and managing unpredictable increases in volume, or maintaining both online and physical channels.听
Ms.听Judan-Jiao听emphasized听the security of the channels involved: 鈥淏usinesses should combine the power of hybrid with the flexibility of open standards. In addition, they must also focus on security mechanisms that protect them from existing and emerging threats while helping them gear up for data explosion and regulatory compliance.鈥听
Open-source and security are key pillars to bring an effective hybrid cloud strategy to life, she added.
ROADMAP TO SUCCESS
According to the same IBM survey on the advantages of hybrid cloud platforms, Philippine organizations expect to be using an average of听six听clouds听by 2023, but only 28% of businesses have a holistic multi-cloud management strategy in place.听听
The reality is that executives are investing already, to which Ms.听Judan-Jiao advised: 鈥As听[an]听organization begins their hybrid cloud journey, it is important to choose the right platform for the hybrid cloud design where it can be built once and deployed听anywhere. Software intelligence in the tools is needed听to enable dynamic delivery.鈥听
A simple way for hybrid cloud adoption to be failsafe is to follow five steps,听she explained 鈥斕strategize听using business objectives as a point of departure,听design听infrastructure to be competitive on desired processes,听move听workloads based on risks and skills availability,听build听cloud-native applications to modernize the portfolio, and听manage听costs by improving server use and identifying unused storage.听
鈥Hybrid cloud is the enabler for business transformation and growth to create enterprises of the future beyond the COVID听times,鈥 Ms.听Judan-Jiao said. 鈥The success or failure of cloud deployments are not technology stories听鈥听they鈥檙e business transformation stories.鈥
