Twitter听clarifies account verification process

Twitter is gradually rolling out its account verification approval process worldwide and the social media company is prepared to handle the high volume of applications, said Brennen 鈥淏鈥 Byrne, Twitter鈥檚 director of product management,听听
Users with听notable听profiles can now apply to have their accounts verified with a听blue听check mark听in their听account settings, after the social networking site relaunched its approval process听for better听transparency, credibility, and clarity.听听
(After听halting verifications in听2017, the social media company听announced this May that it would听start听accepting听submissions听鈥听only to听hit听pause again听a week after.)听

The San Francisco-based company听said these blue badges help people determine the trustworthiness of who they鈥檙e听interacting听with,听which leads听to healthier, more informed conversations.听听
鈥淚t鈥檚 always impossible to know how a community would use a feature [initially],鈥 said听Mr. Byrne. 鈥淲e need to give people access first and then learn how they听would听use it…听The process we will be rolling out will be a better process for those听who will use it [as compared to] those who used our听previous听process.鈥听
At the same Twitter Spaces talk,听trust and safety project听Sarah Husain听said that听those who wish to qualify for verification must fit one of six categories: government; companies, brands, and organizations; news organizations and journalists; entertainment; sports and gaming; and activists, organizers, and other influential individuals.听听
鈥淲e want to make sure people are applying to the right category,鈥澨齭he听said. 鈥淣on-governmental organizations, for example, can apply under听Companies,听Brands and听Organizations.听The Activists category, [meanwhile], is for individuals, not organizers.鈥澨听
Accounts must also be active within the last six months,听plus have听a profile name, a profile image,听and听either a confirmed e-mail address or phone number.听All applications are听reviewed by a human, and听听30听days after听their applications have been denied.听听
鈥淭hose who use pseudonyms can use听other avenues such as听an official e-mail address or an official website to verify their account,鈥澨齛dded听Ms. Husain.听
Ryan Collado, Twitter鈥檚 senior product manager, said听that听Twitter听updated听its听e-mail templates to include context around听rejected听verification requests. 鈥淢oving forward, we would like to have additional context put听upfront听in the application flow,听which will allow customers听to have a better understanding of why they do or do not qualify for verification,鈥 he said.听听
The platform听may remove the verified status of an听account at any time and without notice, in accordance with its听,听said听Mr. Collado. Among the reasons for revocation are if the user is no longer in the听position听they听initially听verified for, or if听the account is flagged for violations such as impersonation.听Repeated violations that include听听and听听are听also听assessed听on听a听case-to-case basis.听听
