The founders of听听补苍诲听听advised听budding entrepreneurs听who听want to turn their ideas听into a business听to 鈥渒now [their] mission and muster the courage to start.鈥听
鈥淚deas are viable, but at the end of the day it鈥檚 action that matters,鈥 said Jaime Hing III, co-founder and chief technology officer of payment gateway听PayMongo, in a听recent听conference organized by Amazon Web Services (AWS), a cloud computing platform provider.听
鈥淵ou can start small, and you may encounter wrong turns, but I鈥檓 pretty sure you鈥檒l learn along the way,鈥澨齢e said.听听
For Joshua Aragon,听chief executive officer听of听Zagana.com, a platform that delivers fresh produce from farmers to consumers, knowing your purpose is the ingredient necessary for working towards what you want to achieve.听
鈥淲hen I hire people, I always ask what their personal mission is to make sure that it鈥檚 aligned with the company鈥檚,鈥 he听said. 鈥淏uild a good company culture.听Why are you here?听Whatever passes through that is the strategy to execute things in place.鈥听
Zagana, which听will听launch its app听soon,听pivoted from a B2B to a B2C company soon after the first national lockdown in March 2020. Mr. Aragon noted the importance of empathy throughout that entire process: 鈥淜now what your customers are feeling… How can you help the community survive the pandemic?鈥听
The pandemic has seen the rise of services in key areas like telehealth, fintech, and ecommerce. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), in particular, witnessed early-stage funding growth in the first quarter of 2021,听shared Digbijoy Shukla, business development lead of AWS鈥 startup ecosystem in the region. Pre-series A deals were up 64.1% year on year, he said, which AWS sees as an encouraging sign.听
鈥淓-commerce, from the backend, also enables a lot of other startups [to thrive], like those in fintech and logistics,鈥 Mr. Shukla听said.听听
Technological shifts have also made it cheaper to launch a startup.听听according to entrepreneur-turned-venture capitalist Mark Suster; from 2010 onwards, the cost whittled down to $50,000. Cloud technology, in particular, has enabled lean startups to leverage technology to launch and scale fast and cost effectively.听听
Mr. Shukla said it was important for founders to be lifelong learners. 鈥淓ven with a good mix of skills, [the skillsets needed] will change听as the business adapts and pivots.鈥澨听
Making the right technological choices is听also听key for听a business to succeed.听Being secure by design is an imperative,听according to Mr.听Shukla,听and customer data should never be risked.听鈥淐ustomers are a privilege,鈥 he said. 鈥淐an this be built securely before you go? If the answer is no, then find another way.鈥澨听
Added听PayMongo鈥檚 Mr. Hing:听鈥淯nderstand how a cloud provider can fit your needs.听Our topmost priority听was听security, followed by reliability, ease of use, and cost. Check those factors and weigh the pros and cons.鈥澨听
The fintech company, Mr. Hing shared, is looking into utilizing machine learning for accurate analysis of risk courses and patterns. 鈥淲e want to provide a safer ecosystem,鈥 he added.听
The Philippines ranks 52nd听in the Global Startup Ecosystem Index鈥檚听latest global startup ranking.听Messrs. Hing听补苍诲听Aragon agreed that ease of doing business, as well as revisiting existing policies, will help spur the growth of the Philippine startup ecosystem.听
鈥淗opefully, we can also create more policies to help build infrastructure like 5G connectivity and road networks [to help bring the produce down to Manila],鈥 Mr. Aragon听said. 鈥斕Patricia B. Mirasol听
