One of the most infamous deceptions in pursuing a business idea is: I have no time.
The same thought entered the minds of then-law student, Carmina Mangalindan and then-banker Miguel Macaalay. But as boyfriend-girlfriend, they still pursued one of their many biz concepts鈥攖heir own version of sleeved blankets.
In three years, they鈥檝e sold thousands of 鈥淏leeves.鈥

鈥淚t鈥檚 difficult to use your hands while snuggled under the comfort of a blanket,鈥 Mr. Macaalay, co鈥慶reator of Bleeves (a contraction of 鈥渂lanket鈥 and 鈥渟leeves鈥), pointed out. Sleeved blankets are ubiquitous in the United States, but it鈥檚 not a popular concept in the country. They took a risk. After all, they also needed the product. Ms. Mangalindan is the type to easily get cold, and she also had to stay up late to read all the cases at law school.
Her parents are in garments manufacturing, so all they were left to do was to find the perfect material to use. They settled with cuddle fleece, one of the softest types of microfiber fabric, and created a sample.
鈥淲e liked it. Then we did a batch of 30 pieces which we sold on Facebook [at around 鈧500 each],鈥 Ms. Mangalindan said. 鈥淚t sold out in a span of 24 hours.鈥
After all, it was so tempting to read a book, eat popcorn while watching movies, or use gadgets while snuggled under the comfort of a sleeved blanket.
They eventually produced more, offering Bleeves in three sizes鈥攌ids, regular, extra long鈥攁nd with prints and custom embroidery.
From that one sample, they鈥檝e already sold 13,000 pieces. Doing a simple calculation, with the cheapest Bleeves priced at around 鈧500, that鈥檚 at least 鈧6,500,000 in gross sales.
鈥淣o matter how brilliant it is, if it doesn鈥檛 serve any purpose in the market, then it won鈥檛 sell,鈥 Mr. Macaalay said. 鈥淓veryone sleeps in blankets even if it鈥檚 hot. Attached to it is the feeling of security.鈥
鈥淏ut there were also times when people weren鈥檛 interested,鈥 he admitted. 鈥淲hat kept us going is the inherent belief in our product. We鈥檙e happy we were able to fulfill a need.鈥
And it鈥檚 a cute product borne of hardcore sacrifice. 鈥淭here were days that I had to be absent and just hoped I wasn鈥檛 called for recitation,鈥 recalled Ms. Mangalindan. 鈥淲e tried to balance it out. We tried to do it together.鈥

Having only each other in this venture鈥攁nd in business, it鈥檚 inevitable for people to sever relationships when things get tough鈥攖hey agreed to focus on their strength as partners.
鈥淚 think you have time if you really want to do it,鈥 Ms. Mangalindan said. 鈥淚f you鈥檙e doing business on the side, it鈥檚 always easy to say, 鈥業 don鈥檛 have the time to do that.鈥 It takes a lot of planning so that you will be able to accomplish things smoothly.鈥
According to Ms. Mangalindan, the dream now is to have their own store because at present, they are limited to conducting sales transactions online or through joining bazaars.
Ms. Mangalindan has since graduated from law school and is now a full鈥慺ledged lawyer. Mr. Macaalay, meanwhile, quit his banking job to pursue a career in the food and business industry. Who would鈥檝e thought that it all began when they believed in Bleeves?
鈥淎nyone can be an entrepreneur, the skills and experience are not the most important parts, but the willingness to start something,鈥 Mr. Macaalay finally said. 鈥淓verything starts small.鈥
