10 rules of modern work: Helping employees thrive

Since the pandemic plunged the workforce into a completely different world of work, new rules must be put in place to address employee-level concerns, according to Deloitte鈥檚 2022 research on modern work presented at an April 26 webinar. To thrive, new rules must help workers feel less overwhelmed, frustrated, and anxious.听听
鈥淢ost of the research and initiatives happening are on a government level or focused on institutions, companies, structure, and design,鈥 said Indranil Roy, Deloitte鈥檚 human capital consulting executive director for Southeast Asia. 鈥淰ery little is being said to the individual white-collar worker.鈥澨听
To address that gap in guidance, Mr. Roy shared that it鈥檚 possible for workers to thrive in this new world with the help of 10 rules.听听
HOW TO TAKE CONTROL
Taking control helps one feel less overwhelmed, according to Deloitte鈥檚 research. It鈥檚 the first aspect of navigating modern work, under which there are three听rules each:听听
1. Bring your own motivation
Daniel H. Pink鈥檚 2009 study on motivation found that purpose, mastery, and autonomy drive people to do better. In a modern work set-up where the boss isn鈥檛 looking over a worker鈥檚 shoulder per se or driving them directly, motivation is one鈥檚 personal business.听鈥淏ring your own motivation because no one else will,鈥 reminded Mr. Roy.听听
2. Set long-term and short-term goals
Though work goals are often structured quarterly, which is medium-term, a worker must set his or her own long-term and short-term goals to avoid getting overwhelmed.听听
Mr. Roy explained: 鈥淟ong-term goals are typically defined by 鈥榤ultipliables,鈥 or getting x times听better in a period of x years, while short-term goals are defined by increments, or getting better x percent in a couple of weeks.鈥澨听
Goal setting becomes digestible when guided by aspirations as well as action plans.听听
3. Shape your next job
Modern jobs disappear in four years or less, according to Deloitte. This means workers must make the most out of their current job鈥檚 life cycle by dividing it into four stages.听听
Gearing up comes in the first six听months, where one learns the ropes. This is followed by growth, which lasts about听one or two years. After this, we become complacent, said Mr. Roy.听听
The third year should be where a worker reimagines the way he or she works, so as not to settle. Finally, the transition phase is when one prepares for their next job.听听
HOW TO BE AWESOME
To feel awesome is to counter feelings of frustration since this validates one鈥檚 efforts, Mr. Roy explained. The three rules under this are all about relationships with work.听听
1. Your users will judge your work
In terms of judging work, Deloitte research found that the clients听and听the boss are important, so impressing both is necessary.听听
鈥淭he 鈥榓wesome zone鈥 is when you meet and exceed the expectations of the users you serve as well as produce well in the eyes of your boss,鈥 said Mr. Roy. 鈥淭he feeling of achieving something has to rely on these two听dimensions.鈥澨听
2. Work in sprints
As for pace, things changing very quickly, usually in the span of two听weeks, means one has to approach work in sprints.听听听
Mr. Roy shared: 鈥淚t鈥檚 critical to celebrate the wins to keep motivated. It鈥檚 also critical to reorient and learn from the bad weeks.鈥澨听
It鈥檚 best to do this kind of assessment every other week, like in between sprints.听听
3. Work from anywhere, but work out loud
John Stepper鈥檚 2015 study 鈥淲orking Out Loud鈥 linked value in one鈥檚 network to visibility 鈥 which is key especially now when the workforce may tend to be invisible or isolated.听
A suggestion was to publish one鈥檚 work internally to gain a sense of importance, or take the initiative in curating elements of interests in others鈥 work, which helps form connections.听听
鈥淣etworking is now a required skill, not just a nice-to-have skill,鈥 Mr. Roy added. 鈥淚t doesn鈥檛 mean showing off, but rather connecting the dots in meaningful, helpful ways.鈥澨听
HOW TO GROW
The final aspect of navigating modern work is growth, which covers the final three听rules that address feelings of anxiety about one鈥檚 career path.听
1. Turn your workflow into a learnflow
Deloitte鈥檚 research described that learning should be听planned and integrated into the calendar, much like work. Mr. Roy suggested color-coding one鈥檚 calendar by red (actual work) and blue (reading, strategizing, reviewing).听听
鈥淟et鈥檚 reduce meaningless update meetings and increase strategic meetings,鈥 he said.听听
2. Skill across and scale up
There are people who have rocket fuel for growth, according to Mr. Roy.听
He explained that becoming better only at what you do is scaling up, but it鈥檚 also important to combine that with other things, or skill across, to truly grow.听听
3. Master differences
For this rule, the Deloitte brochure highlighted that complexity needs diversity.听听
鈥淲e grew up in traditional work where different functions solve for different complexity vectors,鈥 Mr. Roy explained. 鈥淣ow, teams solve all vectors together.鈥澨听
This means designers and marketers are not just concerned about desirability, engineers and systems people don鈥檛 only work on feasibility, business and finance don鈥檛 just look into viability, and human resources don鈥檛 only cater to sustainability.听听
THE GOLDEN RULE
Finally, Mr. Roy emphasized the last rule that runs alongside the other three 鈥 running a side hustle.听听听
鈥淚n some ways it is similar to a hobby. It should be something you鈥檙e passionate about, but it is set apart because it helps you developskills听you鈥檙e new to, and it connects you with new people,鈥 he said.听听
