鈥淲hen I was reading through it, I saw myself in many of the stories,鈥 said Michelline Espiritu Suarez, an author and columnist at the听Philippine Star, at the recent book launch.听
Among the themes that resonated were that of being the eldest child in an Asian family, as well as that of being validated on the basis of physical appearance.听听听
鈥淢ore than anything else, it鈥檚 about the power of finding the words to describe the experience young women face,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hen I was growing up, there were no such words.鈥澨听
The diversity of voices 鈥 and media 鈥 in听Big Deal听was intentional, according to book editor Katya F. Lichauco.听听
鈥淲hen it comes to discussing the issues women face, we didn鈥檛 want a single voice. We wanted a chorus of voices. The message of each author and artist on an individual level is important, but what they signify as a whole may be just as significant: Filipino women everywhere must speak out,鈥 said Ms. Lichauco in a press statement.听听
Contributor Keziah O. Acharon, a 23-year-old literature graduate and law student, added that the听Big Deal听is important because it allows 鈥渧oices from the periphery to rewrite the predominant male narrative鈥 and differentiates the Filipina experience from that of her Western counterparts.听
鈥淔ilipinas share the same context and hence, share the same collective experience,鈥 she said, noting culturally distinct concepts such as听panliligaw听(courtship) and听dalagang听Filipina听(the traditional Filipina maiden).听听听
Big Deal听is the first in a series published by Bookshelf PH.听. 鈥听Patricia B. Mirasol
